Beef
Beef a supporting character in Dispatch. He is the pet dog of Robert Robertson.
Biography
Beef was adopted by Robert at some point during his career as Mecha Man and was likely the closest thing he had to a friend following his self-isolation.
When Robert received a job as a dispatcher at the SDN following the destruction of the Mecha Man suit, he took Beef with him so that he and Chase could keep an eye on him while on the job.
During the Red Ring raid on the Torrance SDN office, Shroud held Beef hostage, threatening to kill the dog if Robert did not hand over the Astral Pulse. Robert either complied or gave the villain both the Astral Pulse and the inferior Proto-Pulse. Regardless, Shroud was defeated soon after, and Beef celebrated with his friends.
Personality
Beef exhibits a typical lovable dog personality. He is very loyal to Robert Robertson and is affectionate towards the other members of the SDN. He appears generally simple-minded and clueless, seemingly unaware that Shroud was threatening him during his final confrontation with the Z-Team, only showing worry when he was held over the edge of the building.
He's somewhat spoiled, silently begging for some of Robert's cereal in Episode 1: Pivot, and for a piece of his sandwich in Episode 4: Restructure, with the latter being indulged automatically.
Beef seems to have a morbid habit of licking up blood, licking Robert's bleeding nose clean in the introduction scene, and drinking from a pool of Shroud's blood in the villain Invisigal ending. He also attempts to lick up the spilled coffee that's thrown at Robert, before being stopped by his owner.
Appearance
Beef is a small and obese male chihuahua with black and white fur and short, stubby legs. He typically wears a red collar.
Abilities
- Superhuman Smell: Being a dog, Beef has an excellent sense of smell, allowing him to sense Invisigal is close even though she is invisible.
Relationships
Robert Robertson
Robert is Beef's owner. Robert is extremely protective of Beef, often bringing him to work at the SDN office to keep an eye on him while he works. The affection Robert holds for his dog was at one point exploited by Shroud, who threatens to kill Beef if Robert did not surrender the Astral Pulse.
Chase
Chase, a fellow dispatcher at the SDN office, has a profound affection for Beef. He frequently dotes on the dog and at one point emphatically states that he would "let literally everyone here melt in eternal hell" before allowing any harm to come to Beef. Chase has gone out of his way to spoil him by buying treats, a few toys, and a dog bed for him to rest at by his desk. This affection is returned by Beef, who cuddles up to Chase and slept in his chair while he was comatose.
Trivia
- Beef is based on writer Pierre Shorette's real dog.[1]
